Microsoft has received reports of an issue in which some customers that using Mac Outlook or Entourage may be unable to send messages exceeding a size of 6 megabytes. Engineers have identified the root cause of the issue and are in the process of a deploying an update to the affected environments. As a temporary workaround, the users can use Outlook Web App to send emails with large attachments. The next update will be provided by December 10, 2013, at 8:00 PM UTC.

I have the same issue sending 5MB+ attachments.

Error code: -18500
Sending attachments of any size works fine in the browser while logged into Office Online in OWA.
Has been going on since Sunday I believe. No large attachments go through.
Running Outlook 2011 for Mac version 14.3.8 on Mac OSX 10.9.

Regarding the original "An unknown error occurred in Outlook" Error code: #17886 issue, I would like to confirm if there is any folder or subfolder that is very large or has a massive amount of messages?

Hi Robin,
The maximum message send size for Office 365 is 35 MB. Based on my experience, it's same as OWA and the size limitation can't be extended.
Recently, Microsoft has received reports of an issue in which some customers using Mac Outlook or Entourage may be unable to send messages exceeding a size of 6 megabytes. Microsoft is working to resolve the issue. If you have this issue, please don't hesitate to let me know.

I did a lot of research for the “Unknown Error( #17886)” issue at my side, and found that it also could be caused at the server side. However, based on the current situation, we are not sure whether this issue is related to the 18500 error issue which is being fixed. Therefore, I suggest you check the “Unknown Error( #17886)” issue again after the 18500 error issue is fixed. I also would like to collect the tenant domain name (the free domain looks like xxx.onmicrosoft.com) via private message. If the issue persists then, I will involve the backend team to do more investigating on the “Unknown Error( #17886)” issue. Hi all,
I have office 365 which includes the desktop softare and this is installed on my macbookpro, everything has been working fine until I visited a customer on their site and couldn't get an internet connection. The office software would not work which obviously left me looking a little stupid. I really need to understand why it would not work.

From the description, I understand that you have run into the issue when using Office 2011 for Mac installed from the Office 365 download portal(https://portal.microsoftonline.com/OLS/MySoftware.aspx). Sorry for the inconvenience brought to you.
Generally, after activating the Office software with the Office 365 ID and password, we can use the Office application no matter whether it is offline or online. I’d like to share this article with you for further instruction: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg702619.aspx
Regarding “The office software would not work” you mentioned, I’d like to confirm the situation is that you cannot open the application or you cannot edit the content in the document or else something. Do you get any messages? Providing the related screenshot for us is recommended. Please upload the screenshot by clicking Use rich formatting and selecting Insert Image.

I'm having some difficulty reproducing this consistently. Here's what I've been able to find so far:
1) Files sent from internal emails seem to come through regardless of size
2) A large file (>25MB) sent from outside did not come through and the sender did not receive a message delivery error - it just disappeared into the ether
3) A less large file (15MB) came through into everything (OWA, PC, and Mac).
So, I'm now at a loss to explain the handful of emails where it has occurred (i.e. emails that came through into OWA but were nowhere to be found in Outlook 2011).
I'll post back here again if I can reproduce the problem consistently.
