Hi Rich,

I could fully understand what the performance it is when I check out the .AI files from the online site. I thus agree with you to choose Microsoft Document Connection to check if it meets your requirement better when the .AI files needing to edit for multiple versions in various locations.

Since the Check out/in procedure works smoothly on the Office files, I did further research to check its performance on the 3rd party files, such as AI files, PDF files.

I notice the AI files can be “Check out” smoothly from either the online site or the Document Connection. After I click “Check out”, the file is downloaded as a temporary copy on my machine.  And any changes that I make appear only in the file on my computer. However, the problem is the “Check in” option is grayed out so the changes couldn’t be saved to the online site. I reproduce the same situation as yours. Moreover, I found the same issue occurs on a PDF file.

Because the Office files work normally in this process, it’s probably a current limitation about SharePointfunctionality for the .AI files or the PDF files. As a temporary workaround, you may have to save as the files to the local drive and then upload to the site again after making changes. But it cannot be regarded as a satisfied solution, as you have mentioned.

Presently, we feel truly sorry that some SharePoint functionality for the 3rd party files doesn’t work as well as the Office files. I could understand the Adobe Illustrator .AI files play an important role in your business and imagine how convenient it will bring you if the AI files work with more compatibility with SharePoint online services and Document Connection. In order that your requirement can be met better in the future, I recommend you submit feedback for improving our products via this link.
