Lync for Mac 2011: Software signing error / unable to connect

Hi All,

We are running a small test group on Lync online ahead of our main Office 365 migration. We have Lync 2013 up and running on our Windows PC's ok.

However, our Mountain Lion MacBook is putting up a fight.

After downloading Lync for Mac 2011 from the Lync online site, on install it gave the error that the software was "from an unidentified developer". Now, I doubt Microsoft forgot to sign their software, and therefore presumably there is something odd in the certificate chain?

We tried it on a second MacBook - same error. Both MacBooks have a local install version of Office for Mac 2011 installed and running fine, it's just the Lync client obtained via Office 365 that seems to have the issue.

Once we have bypassed the install security warning ok and are up and running, we get the error "Sign in to Microsoft Lync failed because the service is not available or you may not be connected to the internet". And yes, Safari can get internet access ok.

Now, unfortunately I'm a Windows boy so are only just learning fault finding on these mac's, but my Windows history suggests a security certificate chain issue is a possibly related issue (as unidentified developer - unlikely Apple hasn't heard of Microsoft by now....),

I even wondered if the failure to connect is due to a certificate error as lync would probably refuse a SSL unless it was happy with the certificate chain. But it could also be something else...

Anybody else hit this?

Suggestion how to fault find (before I dust of my hammer to start fault finding)?

Help

Regards,

ED
