I too didn't know that there was a file number limit. I'm a small business. There is myself and my assistant. I don't have an IT team!
Microsoft advertise Office 365 as being suitable for small business. They advertise that it has "File storage and sharing with 1 TB of storage/user" They do not mention that there are file limits. They advertise it as being "Office in the cloud".
I suspect that they are holding off OneDrive for Business for Mac until they release the new version of Office for Mac.
Currently, the Beckfish sync solution appears suitable for my needs which are mostly for being able to work on documents between my MacBook and iPad.
