Editing search results in Sharepoint Online

I have a custom column added to various document types within my Sharepoint site. This column is a plain text choice designating the current status of a document. I would like this status to appear in search results next to the document name. I have followed instructions to create an enterprise search center (so am editing results.aspx/the associated columns and xsl on this search center). Am I right in believing that you cannot display information from extra columns in search results (by adding them to the xsl or by any other method)?

I have also tried adding a new column as managed metadata. So far I can add this new column to the column list (of results.aspx) without the dreaded "Property doesn’t exist or is used in a manner inconsistent with schema settings." error appearing, but I cannot get them to show in results.

It cannot be this hard to get extra information to show on search results.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
